Its an old Scots (16th century) word meaning "perhaps" or "possibly". Its not really used in common speech now but mainly in literature...fiction, poetry etc. A lot of old Scots words have fallen into dis-use but I think some of them can convey a certain mystery and musicality that modern words don't...thats my excuse!

Musicality, certainly - although I miss the scottish accent, which must add much flavour to it.
A beautiful word anyway, and well-chosen.
